Newroz Piroz Be!

March 21st, 2009

All of us at KAYO-Nashville would like to wish you a happy and safe Newroz!

Friends at a Newroz bonfire

Friends at a Newroz bonfire

Every year on March 21st, millions of Kurds across the world celebrate Newroz. Newroz is the beginning of the year, or New Years day, for the Kurdish people and has been celebrated since ancient times. The word, “Newroz,” originated from the word “Nû Roj” (as it still referred to in some areas of Kurdistan), which in the Kurdish language means “New Day.” The 21st of March marks the beginning of spring and the start of the year for the Kurds.

While Newroz, or Nû Roj, is often regarded as the New Year holiday for many nations and tribes in the Middle East, the holiday has a much more significant meaning for the Kurdish people. Newroz is a symbol of liberation and a new day celebrating the rebirth of life and nature. Throughout the history of Kurdistan, and up until this very day, the Kurdish people have used the Newroz holiday to celebrate peace and freedom. Kurds see Newroz as a day that signifies the dreams, hopes and aspirations of their nation and many others throughout the world. For the Kurdish people, Newroz is not just a new day but it is a new beginning.

In mid February KAYO-Nashville provided all of our members with the amazing opportunity to volunteer at the Nashville Rescue Mission. Well that day came on the 20 of February and it was an amazing success. We had tons of volunteers show up to partake in the event. I want to thank all the people who turned out and made it the success that it was. It was a pleasure having the opportunity to help the workers and learning all that we did while there. It was nice to be able to help  the mission workers with their daily tasks.

Again thanks to all those involved, and I hope that you check back with us for more  upcoming community outreach opportunities.

nrmbuilding

Friday Febuary 20, 2009 (4:30pm to 7:00pm)

On Friday, 20 of February, KAYO has set up an appointment at the Nashville Rescue Mission for its members and others who would like to volunteer. The Nashville Rescue Mission seeks to help the hurting of Middle Tennessee by offering food, clothing and shelter to the homeless and recovery programs to those enslaved in life degrading problems. Volunteers are an essential part of the Nashville Rescue Mission’s team. Since 1954, Mission volunteers have helped change lives in every capacity from serving meals and building playgrounds to providing medical care and tutoring to Recovery Program clients. We will be serving meals in the men’s facility during lunch (4:30pm – 7:00pm).

Again, I would like to remind everyone that you do not have to be just a KAYO member to volunteer. Volunteer and helping is not limited to few, but it is a duty to all. This volunteer opportunity, in addition, will give you a discount for our up coming Newroz party in March. (Currently all spots have been filled for the volunteer opportunity)
